<![CDATA[IATA calls for passenger face covering and crew masks, opposes onboard social distancing]]>
IATA does not support mandating social distancing measures that would leave ‘middle seats’ empty.

Evidence suggests that the risk of transmission on board aircraft is low. Mask-wearing by passengers and crew will reduce the already low risk, while avoiding the dramatic cost increases to air travel that onboard social distancing measures would bring.

“The safety of passengers and crew is paramount. The aviation industry is working with governments to re-start flying when this can be done safely. Evidence suggests that the risk of transmission on board aircraft is low. And we will take measures—such as the wearing of face coverings by passengers and masks by crew—to add extra layers of protection. We must arrive at a solution that gives passengers the confidence to fly and keeps the cost of flying affordable. One without the other will have no lasting benefit,” said Alexandre de Juniac, IATA’s Director General and CEO.

IATA recommends mandatory face-coverings for passengers and masks for crew as one of several actions to reduce the already low risk of contracting COVID-19 on board aircraft.

In addition to face coverings, these layers of temporary biosecurity measures being proposed include:

Temperature screening of passengers, airport workers and travelers, boarding and deplaning processes that reduce contact with other passengers or crew, limiting movement within the cabin during flight, more frequent and deeper cabin cleaning; and simplified catering procedures that lower crew movement and interaction with passengers.

When proven and available at scale, testing for COVID-19 or immunity passports could also be included as temporary biosecurity measures.

IATA does not recommend restricting the use of the ‘middle seat’ to create social distancing while onboard aircraft.

Evidence, although limited, suggests that, the risk of virus transmission on board aircraft is low even without special measures.

Calls for social distancing measures on aircraft would fundamentally shift the economics of aviation by slashing the maximum load factor to 62%. That is well below the average industry breakeven load factor of 77%.

With fewer seats to sell, unit costs would rise sharply. Compared to 2019, air fares would need to go up dramatically—between 43% and 54% depending on the region—just to break even.]]>

<![CDATA[Egypt sets conditions for hotels to re-open amid Covid-19]]>
Minister Anani added that hotels will operate by a maximum 50 percent of their capacity as of June.

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli concluded the meeting by emphasizing the crucial importance of the tourism sector as a source of employment opportunities for millions of young people, and as a state resource, pointing out that the country has been keen during the past period to reduce the negative effects on this sector and its employees due to the global crisis of the Corona virus.

Conditions for hotels to follow

Hotels willing to resume work in case the government allows internal tourism in the coming period will have to follow a set of seven pillars for safe operation amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The Federation of Chambers of Commerce, in cooperation with the Chamber of Hotel Establishments, set the seven main pillars and explained that the pillars represent an action plan for safe tourism operation through applying a package of precautionary, preventive and sanitary measures at hotels and restaurants.

The plan includes seven axes, to which hotels and tourist facilities have to commit the moment they start hosting the guest and until their departure. The first pillar is the preventive measures at hotels upon receiving guests, in addition to internal supervision on laundry, food and beverages, swimming pools, beaches and gyms.

The measures further include housing, occupancy rate, providing awareness signs, and services to ensure a safe working environment to prevent the spread of the virus.

According to the cabinet, the operating controls of restaurants in hotels were also reviewed, which include a ban on serving the buffet, relying on pre-defined menus, a ban on serving hookahs, measuring temperatures for restaurant diners, leaving a distance of no less than two meters between dining tables, and one meter between each person and another at the table, while taking into consideration the families with a maximum of six chairs on the large table, relying on single-use dining utensils as much as possible, placing sterilizers and sterilizing napkins on each dining table, and placing awareness instructions throughout the restaurant.

The conditions for internal supervision and laundry services, which include daily cleaning of rooms using the tools for the infection prevention vehicle and following the instructions of the Ministry of Health, were also reviewed, and cleansing and sterilizing all tangible points every hour in public places and public toilets using disinfectants decided by the Ministry of Health.

Hisham el-Shaer, a member of the Hotel Establishments Chamber, great preparations are taking place in order to receive domestic tourism, pointing out that all hotels were sterilized, either in agreement with the Ministry of Health or through a clear protocol with the facilities’ administrations.

“All workers in the field of tourism have been released from quarantine, and those who were infected have recovered and left hospital, and work will resume at tourist facilities in accordance with specific parameters, where all workers should wear gloves and masks,” Shaer added.]]>

Demand for air travel has evaporated during the coronavirus outbreak, and the aerospace company continues to reel from the 737 Max grounding.

The company announced it would cut 10% of its jobs, about 16,000 positions, through a combination of buyouts, natural attrition and involuntary layoffs.

The cuts will be deepest in Boeing's commercial airplane unit - which will lose about 15% of jobs. And Boeing said it would drastically scale back production of the two widebody passenger jets, the 787 Dreamliner and the 777.

"The demand for commercial airline travel has fallen off a cliff," said Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun. "The pandemic is also delivering a body blow to our business."

The company lost $1.7 billion from its core operations, a bit worse than Wall Street had expected.

Boeing was hit by both by the 737 Max crisis as well as airlines canceling and delaying orders for new planes because of the pandemic.

The airline suspended 22,626 employees earlier this month, making use of the U.K. government scheme offering to pay up to 80% of the wages of staff unable to work due to the virus.

But Cruz wrote on Tuesday: “There?is no Government bailout standing by for BA and we cannot expect the taxpayer to offset salaries indefinitely. Any money we borrow now will only be short-term and will not address the longer-term challenges we will face.”

BA parent International Consolidated Airlines Group IAG said on Tuesday that up to 12,000 workers could now permanently lose their jobs, subject to consultations with trade unions. The announcement was made after the London close. IAG stock has fallen 65% so far in 2020.

<![CDATA[IATA: Potential revenue loss by European carriers in 2020 up to $89 bn]]>
This is an increase over the previous estimates (released 24 March) of $76 billion and 46% respectively, the IATA said in its recent analysis detailing the risk to jobs from the mounting financial crisis threatening European airlines amid the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Overall, we estimate that the present 90% collapse in air traffic puts around 6.7 million jobs at risk and could lead to a negative GDP impact of $452 billion across Europe. This equates to an additional 1.1 million jobs and $74 billion in GDP over the March estimates of 5.6 million jobs and $378 billion," according to the IATA's analysis.

The increasing risk to jobs and GDP is due to a greater impact than previously expected from the air travel restrictions introduced as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. IATA’s new analysis is based on a scenario of severe travel restrictions lasting for three months, with a gradual lifting of restrictions in domestic markets, followed by regional and intercontinental travel.

The United Kingdom will see 140 million fewer passengers resulting in a $26.1bn revenue loss, risking almost 661,200 jobs and around $50.3bn in contribution to the UK economy.

Meanwhile, Spain will witness 114 million fewer passengers resulting in a $15.5bn revenue loss, risking 901,300 jobs and $59.4bn in contribution to Spain’s economy.

"It is essential that governments move quickly to minimize this economic damage. Among the first priorities should be direct financial support, loans and tax relief to airlines. Regulatory relief is also crucial, especially a temporary amendment to EU261 to give greater flexibility on the terms of repayments for cancelled flights."

"Our latest impact assessment shows that the number of jobs at risk has increased to 6.7 million across Europe. As airlines face an unprecedented liquidity crisis, we desperately need European government financial and regulatory support,“ said Rafael Schvartzman, IATA’s Regional Vice President for Europe.]]>

<![CDATA[Pakistan summons Indian official to protest at cross-border shelling]]>
India and Pakistan have accused each other of mortar and artillery shelling along the de facto border known as the Line of Control (LoC) that divides the disputed Kashmir region. The sporadic exchanges began on Saturday.

The two South Asian nuclear powers both claim the Kashmir region in full, but rule only parts, and often accuse each other of breaching a 2003 ceasefire pact by shelling and firing across the LoC.

The Pakistani foreign ministry said in a statement that Islamabad had summoned an Indian ministry official to lodge a protest over ceasefire violations by Delhi.

Kashmir remains divided between the two countries since they won independence from British rule in 1947. The neighbours have fought two of their three wars over Kashmir.

India said at the weekend that Pakistani shelling had killed three civilians, while the Pakistani foreign ministry said Indian firing had killed the child and wounded four others.

“This year, India has so far committed 749 ceasefire violations to date,” the ministry said, and it condemned the targeting of innocent civilians.

Tension between the two countries was renewed when New Delhi withdrew the autonomy of its part of the Kashmir region in 2019 and split it into territories federally administered by India. Until then, it had had autonomy over all matters except defence, communications and foreign affairs.

India accuses Pakistan of training and sending militants across the border to launch attacks and support a Kashmiri separatist movement against Indian rule.

<![CDATA[Egypt applies for 8th world heritage site with Natrun Valley]]>
Egypt has one natural and six cultural sites in the list. Abu Mena heritage site of Alexandria was inscribed in 1979, and it features an early Christian holy city built over the tomb of Saint Menas, who died in A.D. 296.

Thebes and Memphis with their necropolis, Nubian Monuments from Abu Simbel to Philae , and Historic Cairo were also inscribed in 1979. St. Catherine area with its ancient monastery and mountains holy to the Abrahami religions in South Sinai was included in 2002. In 2005, the Whale Valley in Fayoum was accepted as a natural site that features whale fossils with feet.

The Naturn Valley has been in Egypt's tentative list of 33 sites for years. Finally, Egypt has prepared the necessary procedures to move the site to the World Heritage List. The area hosts four beautiful, ancient monasteries that still boast monastic life. They are the fourth-century monasteries of saints Bishoy and Macarius, the Parameos Monastery, and the sixth-century Syrian Monastery.

In 2018, the Vatican acknowledged the Natrun Valley as a pilgrimage point, being one of the areas believed by some to have hosted the Holy Family in their journey fleeing the persecution of King Herod.

One of the most stunning landscapes on the trail of the Holy Family in Egypt is that surrounding monasteries located in Wadi el-Natrun, a valley lying between Cairo and Alexandria. It is unconfirmed whether or not the Holy Family were actually in the area, but those who believe they were claim that branches of the Nile River crossed through the valley at the time, hence their arrival therein.

Others from within the Orthodox Church believe there are is not enough evidence to prove reports of a Holy Family visit, reasoning that the natrun salt-saturated valley is too rough for a child, a young mother and an old man.

parameos hindy hindy

The valley’s oldest recorded name is the Hieroglyphic Sekhet Hemat (the salt field) and the Ancient Egyptians extracted its salt for mummification. Regardless of the controversy, historians agree this is where monasticism was first founded, back in the fourth century.

The Monastery of Saint Macarius encompasses 11.3 square meters, including churches, a fort and beautiful forest-like fields that make the monks self-sufficient in terms of food. This particular monastery is famous as a home for highly educated and deeply spiritual monks. The vast land of the monastery, endless green fields, its relative remoteness and the friendliness as well as tolerance of its monks add to the serene atmosphere visitors feel upon entering the long, tree-lined road leading to its gate.

Ankh, the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic ideograph referring to “life,” was carved on one of the monastery’s buildings along with other Christian symbols, such as the two fishes and the five loaves of bread. Russians, Romanians, Greeks and Ethiopians visit the area for religious reasons.

Previously, Father Cyril at el-Paramoesi Monastery told Egypt Today he hopes more tourists will visit to learn how Coptic culture and art evolved over time. He also referred to Hamra (red) Lake, a nature reserve where visitors may take a therapeutic dip after visiting the monasteries complex. Father Cyril added that Wadi el-Natrun “tells the history of monasticism, where people have prayed for centuries. It is also an archeological site and older than Mount Athos in Greece.”

The door to Virgin Mary church in Paramoes Monastery is designed in Fatimid Islamic style, according to Father Cyril. The door dates back to the tenth century: 1,700 years of Pharaonic, Coptic, Byzantine and Islamic art are reflected in the melting pot characteristic of Egyptian culture. Egyptian Christians who migrated from Egypt always bring their children back to monasteries to learn of their roots and the stories of saints, Father Cyril explained.

Egypt is one of the earliest countries that embraced Christianity and is where monasticism was ever founded. If accepted by UNESCO, the Natrun Valley would be the third Christian site in Egypt to be in the World Heritage List.

<![CDATA[Abu Simbel Temples and their uncovered treasures]]>By Consultant Engineer & Architect Medhat Abdul Rahman Ibrahim

When my granddaughter picked up a magazine and read a report about Abu Simbel temple project, she asked some questions about the project and the story of the solar alignment on the face of Ramses II as she knows I am one of the teams who worked in the project.

On February 22, the sun illuminates the four statues of King Ramses II. I would like to share some details concerning the project of Abu Simbel temples.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), some joint venture companies, and the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities had made tremendous progress over 5 years to complete the relocation of Abu Simbel temple away from Lake Nasser to save it from the rising water of the High Dam.

Since the two temples are carved inside mountains, the ceilings, walls and the blocks were marked before cutting them so they can be rebuilt again. The cutting lines of the statues were carefully chosen; the new site was chosen to conserve the same direction of the sun alignment.

The phenomenon of the solar alignment on Ramses II statues attracts a lot of tourism to Egypt, to enjoy the antiquities, and to know more details about the Abu Simbel Temples. This phenomenon occurs twice a year on October 22 and February 22, marking King Ramses’ birthday and coronation, respectively.

In addition to the beautiful drawings on the walls and ceilings, which show the marvelous art of the temple, visitors are encouraged to observe the three faces of the statues because they reflect different facial expressions: one of them is smiling, the other is not and the third looks sad.

Uncovered treasures

Lake Nasser is famous for sailing, fishing, and alligators. The area surrounding the lake is equally important; the abandoned east side of Nasser Lake could be wisely used by the government via using local mud to build bungalows for tourits. This place could be named Abu Simbel Oasis.

In this area, a visitor can watch the stars shinning in the sky and the moon light, especially in the middle of each Islamic month when the moon light covers the lake. So, it is highly recommended to build a great hall with a dome made of glass to watch the sky at night.

a
Astronomy Station - CC via Pixabay-Mammiya.jpg

The construction of an astronomy station on the east side of Lake Nasser will encourage many people to come to Abu Simbel and watch the sky and stars.

Furthermore, the green area on the east side should be maximized to supply people with their needs; new plants can be implanted since water, soil and laborers are available.

Building a fish factory will increase exports, turning Lake Nasser into an added-value for the residents of Upper Egypt. Traditional art and handmade products of the locals must get the needed support to expand to provide special souvenirs for the tourists.

<![CDATA[70 species threatened with extinction in Egypt]]>
"Climate change, habitat fragmentation due to human interference, and over harvesting are the main reasons behind the big loss in biodiversity,"he told reporters.

“In spite of the fact that there are some mammals that are threatened with extinction, we can save them in case all factors of pollution, pet trade, and other elements [the above-mentioned reasons] are alleviated,” he told Egypt Today, giving further details on the seven animals proneto extinction.

Egyptian tortoise

"The Egyptian tortoise, which is considered a pet in many Egyptian houses, is the most threatened mammal with extinction due to illegal trade and poaching," says Hamada, adding that the Ministry of Environment considers all standards that were laid by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) when it announces that any species could become extinct.

“The tortoise is threatened with extinction from its natural environment along the Mediterranean coast. They can be seen in only two places that we cannot reveal for their protection,” he said.

The first global warning of Egyptian tortoise extinction was stated by the IUCN in October 1990, saying that the Egyptian tortoises “are increasingly endangered by habitat destruction and collection from the wild.” To save this species, Egypt has signed the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

Mountain gazelle

"The second species at the top of the list is mountain gazelle. Egypt had three types of gazelles; one of the three species, the mountain gazelle, became extinct dozens of years ago,"said Hamada, revealing that over the past 30 years, Gazellaleptoceros (aka Slender-horned Gazelle) cannot be seen.

Mountain gazelle was put on The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in 2016 as the population of this species has declined to 2,500 individuals worldwide. “The third type is the dorcas gazelle and it became threatened with extinction. The main reason threatening all the Egyptian species is poaching,” he added.

According to Animal Boi, mountain gazelles are considered one of the animals that have horns in females and males. They exist in other areas in the Middle East such as Palestine, Jordan, and Syria.

Sinai Tiger

“As for Sinai’s tiger, it is considered extinct,” hesaid, adding “I have stayed for many weeks in the desert tracking any evidence of its existence. But I found nothing.”

The tiger has become extinct due to hunting it and its food (rabbits and deer), the matter that causes an imbalance in the ecology system. “All these factors pushed this strain of tigers to find another place to search for food. Seeing it became impossible,” he continued.

Saint Catherine Protected Area in South Sinai was the natural environment for these leopards, according to the Ministry of Environment's data. The head of Elba National Park in the Red Sea told Youm7 newspaper in 2016 that some local residents saw a Sinai leopard, adding that this species was also seen in 2014 when a leopard attacked a herd of sheep. Sinai leopard was registered as a vulnerable animal at the Red list.

However, a report issued by the CITES in the Seventeenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties in Johannesburg,South Africa on September 24 –October 5,2016, said that Sinai tiger's presence has not been detectedsince 1995.

Cheetah

"Cheetah, the fastest land animal in the world, was seen in Egypt 20 years ago. However, it cannot be said that it has disappeared, but it is quite difficult to see it," Hamada said.

According to National Geographic, cheetahscan drink once every three to four days, and their speed ranges from 0 to 60 miles an hour in only 30 seconds.
It has been registered as a vulnerable animal on the IUCN red list in 2015 as their number has decreased, recording 6,674 individuals around the globe. However, the UN Wildlife Day data says that the number of cheetahs reached only 7,100 in the wild. This strain lives in desert, grassland, savanna and shrubland.

“Cheetahs have vanished from approximately 90 percent of their historic range in Africa, and are extinct in Asia except for a single, isolated population of perhaps 50 individuals in central Iran,” the UN Wildlife Day said.

IUCN said that the presence of cheetah is uncertain in Egypt, Djibouti, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Togo.

Nubian ibex
"Nubian ibex is one of the animals which are less vulnerable to extinction," said Hamada. It was announced as “vulnerable” on the IUCN Red List.

It exists in the Sinai Peninsula’s St Catherine Protectorate, where the population was estimated at200 to 250 individuals, according to a study titled "Predicting the Status and Distribution of Nubian Ibex in the High Altitude Mountains of South Sinai by the Nature Conservation Sector, Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency in 2010."

It lives in desert, rocky areas, shrublan, and mountains and is still extant in Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, and Yemen. However, it was announced extinct in Lebanon.

Barbary sheep

"It is threatened with extinction in a degree less than all the previously mentioned species," said Hamada.

In 2008, it was announced as one of the animals that can possiblly become extinct by the IUCN as its number- at that time-rangedbetween 5,000 and 10,000 individuals. Egypt, Algeria, Chad, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Sudan, and Tunisia are their natural habitat.

Hamada said that other species like striped Hyena are also endangered with extinction, adding “hundreds of years ago, Egypt had Jirafas and lions, which became extinct due topollution, climate change, and the shortage of natural resources.

In October 2019, The UK government announced it lifted flight restrictions to Egypt's SharmEl-Sheikh, and no longer advises airlines against flying to the Red Sea resort's airport.

According to the UK Government's statement, improvements in security procedures at the airport, and close co-operation between the UK and Egypt on aviation security, mean commercial airlines can now be allowed to operate routes to and from the airport.

In December 2015, UK flights to the South Sinai famous resort were suspended after a Russian passenger plane was downed in a terrorist attack, killing all 224 people on board. Afterwards, both sides negotiated the resumption of flights, especially as Egypt heightened security measures and implemented all procedures demanded by the Russian side.

“The UK has been clear that flights to Sharm El-Sheikh should resume when the security situation allows. I am pleased that today we can announce the lifting of the current restrictions. We will continue to work closely with our partners in Egypt and airlines that plan to resume flights in the future,” said Minister for the Middle East and North Africa, Andrew Murrison.

<![CDATA[She hikes: What it is like to climb Egypt's 10 highest peaks]]>
Mai Adel, 39, first got intrigued by hiking in Siwa in the far west of the country. She climbed Dakrur Mountain, a hill that gives a panoramic view of the oasis, and watched a heavenly sunrise in 2013.

"The Bedouin guides know me well and know what I did and what I can do. That's how I became confident that I can lead people in hiking trips," the software developer told Egypt Today.

PHOTO-2020-01-02-12-25-38
Mai Adel at the peak of Egypt's 10 highest mountains

Adel created the Facebook page "She Hikes," and despite the name, men have reached out to go on her trips. In fact, one tribe in South Sinai, Hamada tribe, approved in March that their female members work as guides, according to AFP, in a dramatic move per Bedouin traditions.

Adel was initially motivated by all the beauty she witnessed while climbing the 10 mountains, the highest of which is Mount Catherine at an elevation of 2,642 meters. She decided to spread the passion among those who think they cannot climb mountains, herself being a woman in her thirties, and from Fayoum, a largely conservative, agricultural city to the west of Cairo.

"The difficulty did not lie in the height as much as the nature of the mountain. I found Rimhan [which ranks eighth in the highest 10] the most challenging due to its steep slopes and unstable rocks," she added, noting that only one Bedouin guide had climbed the mountain but refused to climb it again. She climbed it in March 2018 with a group of friends and a Bedouin guide who hadn't climbed it before. The leader of the group, Mahmoud el-Gamal, was the one who found a route to the top. He died of a lightning strike in November the same year after climbing a mountain called Jerab al-Reeh, or "the bag of wind."

Adel and one other friend climbed Li'dah, the sixth highest mountain, on their own while a Bedouin guide waited at the foot of the mountain because no guide knew the way to the top. Adel had climbed other mountains by mistake and tried to find it over an entire year, and she even took a geography and map reading courses to locate it. Li'dah, which is very steep, is characterized by very small, unbalanced rocks that slid off once Adel stepped on them, and other very high, smooth rocks that are difficult to reach, according to Adel. The intensity of the wind at that particular mountain is also too strong that it knocked her off a few times.

PHOTO-2020-01-07-15-35-47
Mai Adel with a camel in South Sinai

She does not organize trips to Rimhan or Li'dah and does not recommend them to the hikers due to the dangers she faced climbing them. Organizing trips for her is not about the physical challenge.

"Trips to the same natural location deeply vary depending on the organizer and how they view the place and how they want to make people feel," Adel said

"I love nature in general and mountains in particular. I try to convey the philosophy of loving and living in nature," she added.

Adel also loves storytelling, so she sure she tells her hikers about the history of every mountain they go to, how it got its name, and all stories that might surround it.

She already climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania in January, and her next endeavor is becoming the first Egyptian woman to climb Everest.

In statements, Ayman Abu Zaid, the head of the Egyptian Society for Tourism and Archaeology Development in Luxor city, Upper Egypt, said that this phenomenon comes among many astronomical events related to the sun and its orthogonal rays on ancient Egyptian temples and cemeteries.

He added that the sun shone on the area at 6:36:41 a.m. after arising from the horizon line by an arc length and poured its brightness after nearly five minutes. Then, the phenomenon of orthogonality began as the rays sneaked through the main gate of the Hatshepsut Temple (Deir el-Bahari).

On Sunday, December 22, a shaft of sunlight illuminated the usually dark sanctum of the Karnak temple, an ancient complex in the southern city of Luxor, in an also rare astronomical phenomenon that happens twice a year to mark the summer and winter solstices.

Luxor governor Moustafa Alham attended the ceremony along with a number of archaeologists, astronomers, and Egyptologists.

Tourists gathered to watch the spectacle that has endured for thousands of years of Egyptian history.

The religious complex of Karnak, in Luxor, is the largest ancient religious site in the world.

Egyptologists say the solar alignment at the God Amun sanctum at Karnak coincided with the illumination of his sanctum at the Hatshepsut's temple near the Nile town of Luxor.

The event marks the beginning of winter solstice, an astronomical event that occurs in the northern hemisphere marking the longest night and shortest day of the year.]]>

<![CDATA[Tourism's gifts and woes for Santa and Sami homeland]]>
At its centre, a wooden, fairytale-esque cabin houses Santa's grotto -- since the 1980s, tourism chiefs have set out to market the main town, Rovaniemi, as the world's official home of Santa Claus.

More visitors are now coming to experience winter in the Arctic than ever before.

But Lapland is also the homeland of the indigenous reindeer-herding Sami people, who protest that some in the tourist industry spread offensive stereotypes about Sami people and seek to profit from their ancient culture.

"Almost every day there are people coming to the Sami area asking 'Where can I see the shamans, where are the Sami witches?'" Tiina Sanila-Aikio, president of Finland's Sami Parliament, tells AFP.

"It's only a picture that the tourism industry has created and developed," she says.

- 'Ethically responsible' tourism -

Once known by the now obsolete term "Lapps", the Sami are spread out across the northern parts of Sweden, Finland, Norway and Russia's Kola Peninsula.

Sami representatives accuse some tourism providers of pretending to be Sami when they are not, or selling products and tourist attractions portraying Sami people as magical and primitive.

Last year, the Sami Parliament issued guidelines for "ethically responsible" behaviour from tour operators and visitors in order to preserve Sami culture.

"If, for example, one person refrains from wearing Sami dress because they do not want to be photographed by tourists, that is one person too many," the proposal warned.

Husky rides, among the most popular tourist attractions in Lapland, have also been singled out for criticism by the Sami community, which has herded reindeer across the area's vast fells and forests for over 3,000 years.

Sami representatives claim the dogs, which are not a native Lapland tradition, distress the reindeer which freely roam the forests.

The Sami also object to the growing number of "igloo" hotels in the region, which are a non-Lapland tradition borrowed from elsewhere in the Arctic.

The parliament proposal says the igloos risk creating a "mongrel" and homogenised culture in the region, and suggests instead that tourist providers build accommodation relevant to Lapland's history, such as the Sami "goahti" -- a teepee-like wooden tent traditionally used by reindeer herders.

- Otherworldly Arctic landscapes -

Every passing winter brings record visitors to Lapland including soaring numbers of Chinese in recent years, but also much-needed revenue.

Lapland's Regional Council says that tourism brought in one billion euros ($1.1billion) to the region last year.

Official statistics suggest that visitors from China spend over three times as much on average as holidaymakers from some other countries.

Authorities in Rovaniemi, on the Arctic Circle, face a dilemma: how to reap the economic benefits, while preventing irreversible damage to one of the world's most vulnerable wilderness regions.

"Dog-sledding and longer hikes are popular with French visitors for example, British travellers are especially interested in snowmobiles, and the Asian tourists are most keen on seeing the Northern Lights," Sanna Karkkainen, head of Visit Rovaniemi, tells AFP.

With his knee-length white beard, trademark red robes and oversize grey slippers, Santa switches from Finnish to French to chat to his next visitors, Celia and Jeremie from southern France.

After an official photograph, available to buy afterwards for 45 euros ($50), the visitors are ushered towards the exit.

"Super visit, Santa was very kind," Jeremie tells AFP. "We weren't disappointed."

Every year this decade, the visitor figures to Lapland have reached new highs, hitting 2.9 million overnight stays last year, up from 2.2 million in 2010, according to Statistics Finland.

Some 45,000 Chinese tourists visited Lapland in 2018 -- four times more than in 2015.

The rise followed national airline Finnair dramatically expanding its routes between Europe and Asia and promoting Finland as a stopover hub.

- Investment from China -

Hotelier Tian Zhang, who moved from China to northern Finland 17 years ago, recently became the first foreign investor in Lapland's hotel scene along with a group of her friends from home.

The 33 cabins at the Nova Skyland Hotel, a striking building of wood and glass which opened in November 2017, are regularly fully booked.

Customers come from all over: Spanish and British before Christmas, "Russians in the beginning of January, and in the Chinese New Year we have Chinese," Tian tells AFP.

The Chinese government, too, keen to establish a presence in the Arctic, has also encouraged its companies to develop tourism in Lapland.

Another lucrative market, the Middle East, is also catching on.

"This week we had the first direct Turkish Airlines flight from Istanbul, which of course opens up Rovaniemi to 20 new countries," Karkkainen says.

- Party people -

Booming tourism helped drive Rovaniemi's unemployment rate down to below 10 percent last December, its lowest since 1990 according to the town council.

However, the spectre of mass tourism is a growing concern in a region where residents have traditionally valued tranquility and closeness to nature above all else.

Local media regularly carry stories of tourists soiling the pristine wilderness with rubbish and empty beer cans, or of hordes of visitors causing disturbances in town.

And a recurring grievance is the popularity of accommodation-sharing site Airbnb, says Satu Loiro, Lapland Regional Council's senior tourism advisor.

Locals blame the rentals for noise, overcrowding and mess, as well as pushing up housing costs.

The concerns are not shared by everyone, though.

"I hope that this individual tourism, people staying in Airbnbs, people travelling individually, will grow," dog-sledding entrepreneur Valentijn Beets tells AFP.

"They're actually spreading the money straight to the people without any major players in between."

- Eco-aware tourists -

His voice all but drowned out by the howls of 120 black, white and brown huskies, Beets says his growing business caters to more and more eco-aware tourists.

His clients care about animal welfare and green credentials, he said.

"If you want to differentiate yourself from your competitors, this is a growing group of people who think that (being eco-friendly) is important," he says.

Botswana-born Beets and his Finnish wife Veronika set up Bearhill Husky, close to Rovaniemi, in 2012, offering dog-sled safaris through the Lapland forest.

His kennels are a long way south of the Sami reindeer-herding area but he says that "a well-trained dog team, working responsibly" ought not pose a disturbance to others anyway.

Lapland's remoteness and the long distances make for emissions-heavy travel in the region, which scientists say is heating up twice as fast as the global average.

"We are very dependent on flight traffic," Loiro, from the regional council, tells AFP.

The council plans to encourage tourists to pay to offset their air-travel carbon emissions as well as develop better rail and public transport links.

The shortening winter seasons have already had an impact on the tourist industry, with operators cancelling tours last year due to an unusually snow-free November.

- 'Time is magic here' -

Loiro believes that the tourism industry is learning to better take into account the region's many competing interests.

She said there was now a "responsible tourism network" of operators who recently published a list of "100 deeds for sustainable tourism".

"This includes respecting the Sami culture or using local food, or using biofuels," Loiro said.

The regional council recently laid out a four-year plan for making tourism more environmentally and socially friendly, while still encouraging it to grow, she added.

Back at Santa's village, complete with mocked-up presents and rounds of jolly Christmas songs, the last holidaymakers leave the grotto for the evening and the red- and green-clad elves move the countdown on the wall one day closer to Christmas.

So does Santa have less time for delivering presents, now that record numbers of people are coming to see him?

"Definitely not," he responds, without hesitation.

"We are in the Arctic Circle now, and time is magic here. You just need to know how to be in millions of different places at the same time," he says.

"After practising that for a few centuries, I think I'm managing it quite well."]]>

The visitors were welcomed by a team from the British embassy and public relations staff from Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport, who gave the holidaymakers flowers and gifts in celebration of their arrival.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi on Thursday praised the recent positive developments in the bilateral relations between Egypt and Britain, in a phone call with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, including a decision by the British government to resume flights from Britain to Sharm El-Sheikh.

In October, Adams said in "Al Hekaya" talk show that after the ban lift on flights from the UK to Sharm El Sheikh Airport both Egypt and the UK “can promote Sharm El Sheikh as a happy holiday destination.”

Adams said he thinks that the economic benefits will be huge and that he is very conscious that people running hotels and people working in hotels in Sharm El Sheikh will benefit hugely from British tourists increasing in number.

The ambassador said that the ban lift is the outcome of “the intense cooperation between the Egyptian and British authorities over many months,” which led to “the confidence to make that decision” on the UK's side.

Adams stated that nearly half a million British tourists will visit Egypt this year. “The vast majority of them will enjoy a happy trouble-free holidays. And, many British people live here as well happily as I do myself,” the ambassador added.]]>

<![CDATA[Off The Beaten Track: Why visit Lombok when Traveling to Bali ]]>

And so it was, except for the “soulful” part.

Rice Fields Bali Source backyardtravel
Rice Fields Bali Source backyardtravel

Do not get me wrong; Bali is an amazing destination with so many activities to do and attractions to see. I myself had the chance to experience firsthand many adventures, such as rafting in the Ayung River, diving in the ocean, visiting the famous rice fields in a day long Safari in a convertible and even enjoying the nightlife on a Friday night.

Yet, Bali’s image in my mind is one of serenity, quietness and peace. It is where Eat Pary Love ‘s writer Elizabeth Gilbert met Ketut , whose wisdom changed her life forever.

Uluwatu Temple Bali - Source Wonderful Indonesia Website
Uluwatu Temple Bali - Source Wonderful Indonesia Website

And you can still find traces of all this in big temples such as Uluwatu Temple, which overlooks the ocean in a majestic dreamy landscape between heaven and earth.

However, the buzz of everyday life and the crowded streets – the city annually receives 40 percent of the total number of tourists visiting Indonesia- might have turned the city into an urban metropolis, albeit with friendlier people compared to others.

But luckily, boarding a ferry that takes up to 3 hours and 20 minutes for $24.4 to the neighboring Lombok island carried us to a completely different ambiance, not only quieter, more peaceful and “less traveled” (as the American poet Robert Forest once advised), but almost also gives an impression of visiting another Asian country.

Whereas Hinduism is the main religion of Bali, Lombok, where nature is still considered uncharted territory is known as the “city of a thousand mosques.”

In fact, some people describe Lombok as Bali 30 years ago, because of its virgin scenic nature that harbors sandy azure beaches, waterfalls and mountains.

According to officials we met in the media trip, the Indonesian government has adopted a plan to enhance “Halal tourism” in several islands, and Lombok is part of this drive. Halal tourism is a family friendly sort of tourism; it mainly targets Muslims and is a growing market that non-Muslim countries joined to benefit from.

One of the initiatives to enhance Halal tourism in this island is turning 60 rural villages into Halal home stay, where tourists could experience the daily lives of Indonesians in Lombok and explore the culture for good prices while enjoying other attractions.

Some of these attractions are:

Hindu temples and the “Holy Water,” for what the heart yearns for..

People Praying in Narmada Temple Source Egypt Today
People Praying in Narmada Temple Source Egypt Today

True, Islam is the predominant religion in Lombok, but the island has many spiritual Hindu temples, including Narmada Temple.

As soon as you step into the garden of the temple, you can feel a surprising sense of comfort, because it is similar to that of reaching home after a tedious trip. I guess it is a feeling common in any place of worship, for when we, humans, pray from the heart, we are all the same no matter what religion we embrace, vulnerable flawed beings searching for a meaning.

We were guided to a small prayer room where the caretaker of the temple guards a small fountain that springs right from the mountain. There is a widespread conviction that the water is healing and hence holy. And if you wished for something while drinking, it will come true.

Before entering Hindu temples, people are given colorful ribbons to wrap around their waists for purifying purposes, and if they are wearing short clothes, they put on a “Saroung,” a piece of traditional cloth. If a woman is menstruating, she is not allowed in some temples.

Waterfalls - A Fairytale Quest

Lombok is also a haven for some of the best refreshing waterfalls in Indonesia, such as Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep Waterfalls.

As soon as I approached the forest hosting the waterfalls, I knew I was about to go on a quest similar to those in fairytales, as we waded into a long tranquil trail in the forest adamant to unravel its secrets before reaching the bottom of the waterfall.

However, be cautious of the naughty monkeys, they are the habitat of the forest and they know it and they will make sure you know it. We were advised not to look them directly in the eye, as they could be aggressive.

Sasak Village – Blood shedding as a sacrifice to the god of rain

What Lombok also offered us was a time machine that took us back in time. Once we set foot at the entrance of the village, we felt like we traveled back in time where we met with an old Indonesian tribe, which gave birth to the people living now in the island.

Visiting the traditional village, whose descendants guarded the customs of the elders and protected it from the influence of the outside world, gave us a cultural glimpse on the history of the island.

Sasak Village - stick fighting - source Egypt Today

One of the ancient myths tells that blood should be shed from the head of a powerful fighter in a stick fight in order for the rain to fall. The idea is now featured symbolically in a folkloric dance.

More blood, more rain.

Luckily, nowadays the fierce fighters only battle to commemorate their rich heritage in front of tourists.

Swimming with Turtles in Gili Islands

Another escapade you can try in Lombok is paying a visit to the Gili Islands – which consist of three small islands: Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air. There, you can enjoy a dip in the Indian Ocean with turtles lurking near the coral reefs, as these islands are known to be a turtle territory. Tour operators will refund you if you do not spot at least one. I can attest to that as I spotted two.

Similar to Bali and unlike many places in Lombok, you can enjoy the nightlife in Gili Islands as there are music clubs and pubs by the beaches. It is similar in a way to Dahab in South Sinai of Egypt as hotels, camps, restaurant and cafes overlook the sea.

Mount Rinjani - Full moon prayer by the holy lake

Apart from beaches and forest trekking, if you are an adventure seeker, you can find what you are looking for in a hike on an active volcano, as Mount Rinjani is actually the second highest volcano in Indonesia.

Mount Rinjani - Source en.tempo.co website
Mount Rinjani - Source en.tempo.co website

According to website Wonderful Indonesia - the official site of the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism- within the mountain there is a crescent-shaped lake called Segara Anak and is considered a spiritual place. The Balinese come here each year and perform a ceremony in honor of the mountain spirit. Also, the Wetu Telu people regard the lake as holy and come here to pray on full moon nights.

In a rapidly changing world as the one we live in, travel could be a good tactic to find traces of your old forsaken self, and if you were seeking this encounter; I would recommend you add Lombok to your next destination list.

Yesterday, many visitors came to the site on the occasion of the anniversary of Saint Menas of Alexandria, who died in 296 A.D.

Abu Mena was a town, monastery complex and Christian pilgrimage center in Late Antique Egypt. It is located about 45 km southwest of Alexandria.

There are very few standing remains, but the foundations of most major buildings, such as the great basilica, are easily discernible.

It was named after Saint Menas (Abu Mena) who was martyred. His body was taken from Alexandria on a camel, which was led into the desert beyond Lake Mareotis. At some point, the camel refused to continue walking, despite all efforts to goad it.

This was taken as a sign of divine will, and the body was buried on that spot. ]]>

<![CDATA[Mashat says Egypt to restore tourism glory, return 2010 peak: Bloomberg]]>
In an interview with Bloomberg, Mashat said that the earnings in this fiscal year has been the highest ever in Egypt's history concerning the tourism sector.

“Today’s travelers are looking for experience, they’re looking for diversity of offer and they’re looking for being part of the local community,” Mashat said, adding that Egypt seeks reaching the peak of 2010 in terms of tourist numbers by the end of this year.

The number of tourists dramatically dropped following the January 25 uprising in 2011, which ousted Hosni Mubarak, president at the time, and left the country in a state of turmoil and instability. Tourism represents about 15 percent of the country's economy, according to Bloomberg.

Among recent decisions that is expected to help the recovery of the tourism sector is the UK's lifting of ban on flights to Sharm El Sheikh Airport in October.

UK flights to the South Sinai famous resort has been suspended since December 2015, after a Russian passenger plane was downed in a terrorist attack, killing all 224 people on board. Since then, both sides negotiated the resumption of flights, especially as Egypt heightened security measures and implemented all procedures demanded by the Russian side.

“The UK has been clear that flights to Sharm El-Sheikh should resume when the security situation allows. I am pleased that today we can announce the lifting of the current restrictions. We will continue to work closely with our partners in Egypt and airlines that plan to resume flights in the future,” British Minister for the Middle East and North Africa Andrew Murrison said.

<![CDATA[Qantas, Southwest stepping up checks for cracks in 737 NG aircraft after issues found]]>
The cracks are on what is known as the “pickle fork” - a part that attaches the plane’s fuselage, or body, to the wing structure.

Repairing the cracks requires grounding the airplane, with remedial work costing an estimated $275,000 per aircraft, according to aviation consultancy IBA.

Boeing on Oct. 11 said 38 planes worldwide had been grounded after urgent checks but has not provided a further update. The issue surfaced while the newer 737 MAX model is grounded globally following two deadly crashes.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on Oct. 2 mandated checks of 737 NGs with more than 30,000 take-off and landing cycles within seven days.

It said jets with 22,600 to 29,999 cycles must be inspected within 1,000 cycles, which typically correspond to the number of flights.

Qantas discovered cracks in a plane with about 26,700 cycles that was undergoing heavy maintenance, while Southwest found cracks in one with about 28,500 cycles, sources with knowledge of the matter told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

A Qantas spokesman said the airline had found cracking in one jet with just under 27,000 cycles that had been removed from service for repair.

He said that no Qantas jets had yet reached 30,000 cycles, but that the airline would inspect 33 planes with more than 22,600 cycles by the end of this week.

A Southwest spokesman said he could not confirm the number of cycles of the three jets the airline has pulled from service for pickle fork repairs. He said the company has complied with the FAA directive on inspections but was expanding checks to its entire 737 NG fleet.

In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission last week, Boeing said all 737 NGs with more than 30,000 flight cycles and about one-third of planes with over 22,600 flight cycles had been inspected for pickle fork cracks.

The manufacturer said additional assessments were underway to determine the cause and potential implications for planes with fewer than 22,600 cycles.

“Depending on the results of these assessments, additional inspections or repairs may be required,” Boeing said.

The inauguration of the renovation works is part of the Civil Aviation Ministry’s plan to accommodate the increasing number of passengers, especially during this winter season, with the tourists’ flow to the South Sinai resort expected to rise.

The ministry has concluded the development works at the airport, which includes expanding the Terminal 2 to accommodate 9 million passengers per year, instead of 7 million only. As part of the strategy, the ministry plans to increase the capacity to accommodate 20 million passengers annually, and increase the number of gates from eight to 12, in addition to finalizing all development works surrounding Terminal 2, which are worth L.E. 800 million.

The development works further tackle the security system inside and outside the airport, including the installation of surveillance cameras, passport check counters, in a bid to smoothen the flow of accessing the airport.

Terminal 2 Project at Sharm el-Sheikh Airport is one of the main projects by the ministry to revamp Egyptian airports, raise its efficiency, and increase the capacity, and equipping the facility with the latest international technological systems and providing passengers with the best services. This strategy goes the line with the objectives of Egypt Vision 2030 to develop the air transport’s industry system.

Egypt has significantly invested in safety and security measures including CCTV, airport security, GPS on tour buses and continually reviews and enhances these security steps.
On October 22, the British government removed its advisory against flying to Egypt’s Sharm el-Sheikh resort.

“This announcement follows our aviation security experts’ close cooperation with their Egyptian counterparts. We will work closely with airlines who wish to resume flights,” British Ambassador to Egypt Geoffrey Adams said in the statement.

In an interview with Egyptian TV program Al-Hekaya, Adams expressed his delight at his country's decision to lift the ban on flights to Sharm el-Sheikh, given the significance of tourism to Egypt, expecting UK visitors to come to Egypt to enjoy a happy and problem-free vacation.

Adams also offered promoting tourism to Sharm el-Sheikh, along with the Egyptian government.

Adams said that the intensive cooperation between the British and Egyptian authorities contributed significantly to lifting the flight ban to Sharm el-Sheikh airport.

The UK government announced Tuesday it lifted flight restrictions to Egypt's Sharm el-Sheikh, and no longer advises airlines against flying to the Red Sea resort's airport.

According to the UK government's statement, improvements in security procedures at the airport, and close co-operation between the UK and Egypt on aviation security, mean commercial airlines can now be allowed to operate routes to and from the airport.

This is the first step in the resumption of flights to Sharm El-Sheikh, which is a popular destination for UK holidaymakers. This decision supports air carriers to provide more choice to travellers hoping to visit the country.

We will continue to work closely with our partners in Egypt and airlines that plan to resume flights in the future,” said Minister for the Middle East and North Africa, Dr Andrew Murrison.]]>

The Egyptian minister highlighted that the tourism industry grew by 16.5 percent in 2018, according to the World Tourism and Travel Council figures, which is over four times the average growth of global tourism, recording 3.9 percent.

Al-Mashat listed Tokyo as one of the most important Japanese tourism exporting cities to Egypt, followed by Osaka, and Hokkaido.

According to Mashat, the number of Japanese tourists to Cairo increased by 38.2 percent during the first nine months of 2019, in comparison to the same period of 2018.

Tourism EXPO Japan 2019, scheduled for October 24 and 25, focused on tourism as a major factor for the revitalization of regional economy and job creations.

During the meeting, Tagawa said Egypt is deemed an important tourist destination by Japanese, who are keen to visit and get to know more about the Egyptian culture and heritage.

Tagawa further said he is looking forward to know more about the tourism sector in Egypt and looking forward to cooperate with the Ministry of Tourism in the coming period to increase the number of Japanese tourists to Egypt.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of the 18th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), the statement said.

“The meeting also tackled cooperation in the field of tourism after the launching of the direct flight route between Baku and Sharm El-Sheikh in July 18, 2019, which contributed to higher tourism rates between Egypt and Azerbaijan. In this context, Shoukry expressed Egypt's keenness on increasing tourist traffic into Sharm El-Sheikh during the winter season,” the statement read.

Both sides tackled discuss bilateral relations and issues of common interest, the statement said, adding, “the two officials also exchanged means of boosting and promoting bilateral relations, while emphasizing the prospects of cooperation in the energy sector and refineries in Egypt, especially after all obstacles facing the project were overcome.”

“Finally, the two Foreign Ministers exchanged views on regional issues of mutual interest, whereby Shoukry reviewed developments of the peace process and Egypt's stance and vision vis-à-vis the proposed initiatives, and the developments regarding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam negotiations,” the statement said.

In his speech at the summit, Shoukry discussed the water scarcity that faces African Sahel and Egypt, according to a statement from the ministry of Saturday.

“The problem of water scarcity has become a threat to many parts of the world, especially the African Sahel and Egypt […] all parties when they deal with transboundary rivers and water streams, should act in good faith with an approach to avoid disputes and conflicts,” said Shourkry in his speech.

Egypt and Ethiopia are at loggerheads over the $4-billion dam; Cairo voiced concern over its water share after Ethiopia started building the dam on the Blue Nile in May 2011.

A series of tripartite talks between the two countries along with Sudan began in 2014. One year later, the three countries signed the Declaration of Principles, per which the downstream countries [Egypt and Sudan] should not be negatively affected by the construction of the dam. However, Cairo and Addis Ababa have recently blamed each other for hindering a final agreement concerning a technical problem.

<![CDATA[Monthly flights between Egyptian, Moroccan airliners reach 90: official]]>
This comes on the sidelines of an initiative launched by Morocco’s Royal Air Maroc with a number of Egyptian tourism companies, to visit a number of Moroccan cities, with the aim of promoting tourism between the two countries.

The regional representative stressed the presence of continuous communication between the Egyptian and Moroccan governments to discuss ideas and ways to facilitate the flow of tourism, and to review all proposals to facilitate obtaining visas and removing obstacles that prevent the activation of cooperation protocols in the field of tourism.

The Royal Air Maroc has been working for three years with the Egyptian tourism companies in order to push forward the Egyptian-Moroccan tourism, the representative said.

He also referred to the partnership between the Royal Air Maroc and Egypt’s national airline EgyptAir, to serve the customers of both airliners, in light of the strong relations between the two countries.

Huge leap

The Central Bank of Egypt earlier in October revealed that tourism revenues increased by $2.7 billion to reach $12.570 billion in FY 2019/2018, compared to $9.804 billion in FY 2017/2018.

A report issued by the World Bank under the title "From Floating to Prosperity" praised the structural reforms, stressing that the financial reforms have paid off and led to a gradual decrease in the fiscal deficit.

Egypt has jumped nine places in the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index (TTCI) released by the World Economic Forum (WEF) in September.According to the WEF's travel and tourism ranking report, Egypt's tourism sector ranked 65 in the TTCI.

The report showed that Egypt made a huge leap in tourism promotion and marketing strategy.

According to the report, Egypt is the first Middle Eastern and North African country in the field of environmental sustainability and cultural resources. Egypt also showed the best performance in the security and safety index, the report added.

For her part, Tourism Minister Rania el-Mashat said the new ranking in the TTCI comes in culmination of Egypt's efforts to develop the tourism industry, referring to the structural reform program in this regard.

The year 2020 is anticipated to be a promising year for Cairo and Egypt as a whole. By then, Egypt will have inaugurated the long-awaited Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), the world’s largest museum dedicated to a single civilization.

The Lonely Planet also recommended the Sphinx Airport in Giza for Luxor and the Red Sea holidaymakers, as tourists could take a domestic flight therefrom. There are airports also in Aswan, Sharm el-Sheikh, Marsa Alam, and Hurghada. A trip to GEM will probably include another to the Pyramids as well, given how close they are to the museum.

This coincides with the return of U.K. flights to Sharm el-Sheikh, and there are expectations that Russia will follow suit soon.

The capital of Egypt boasts other places that exhibit culture and history, most notably Islamic Cairo with all its ancient mosques and unique Islamic architecture, Coptic Cairo with even older churches, and countless museums.

She added “This step is a testament to the continuous efforts exerted by the Egyptian government to ensure the safety and security of every visitor in all of Egypt’s destinations, and in South Sinai in particular,” according to a Tuesday statement by the Ministry of Tourism.

Egypt has significantly invested in safety and security measures including CCTV, airport security, GPS on tour buses and continually reviews and enhances these security steps.

Dr. Al-Mashat said “The lift of the travel ban on Sharm El Sheikh regains confidence in one of the most popular, entertaining and enjoyable tourism destinations globally, welcoming tourists from all over the world.”

The British government has today informed airlines that it no longer advises against flying to Sharm el-Sheikh airport. An advice that was imposed since November 2015.

The hippopotamus is a huge African Herbivore and is commonly known in Egypt as “Sayed Qeshta.”

The hippo is a semi-aquatic animal that inhabits lakes and rivers in Africa and lives in groups. It stays most of the day in the water or mud until it cools. Herding is an activity performed by each animal alone, i.e., that they do not gather as they do in the water near each others.

Native to the deserts of Arabian Peninsula, the Arabian Oryx is considered endangered due to uncontrolled hunting and capture. It went extinct in the wild in 1972, but rescue operations took over, and transferred to zoos for captive breeding.

Giza Zoo has recently received two Red Kangaroos coming from Slovakia. The garden has never hosted Kangaroos since its establishment in 1891. However, the zoo is now rendered without elephants after the death of Naema the Elephant due to a blood clot in its heart, according to Director of Giza Zoo Maha Saber.

A periodic vaccination campaign takes part of Egypt's Ministry of Agriculture, General Authority for Veterinary Services to protect animals from common diseases such as Ovine rinderpest, which is contagious and common among goats and sheep.

Giza Zoo Head, Mohamed Raga’ei, said that these kinds of campaigns usually take place during the Zoo weekly off day, with the participation of workers and veterinarians.

Giza Zoo is Egypt's most famous and historic zoo; it is also considered the biggest animal park in the Middle East, and it was opened for the public in 1891 during the rule of Khedive Tawfiq. Many kinds of rare and endangered animals and birds live in the park.

<![CDATA[Reprieve for Thomas Cook's UK stores as Hays Travel deal saves up to 2,500 jobs]]>
Thomas Cook, the world’s oldest travel company whose shops have been a feature of British town centers for generations, collapsed last month, stranding tens of thousands of passengers as its UK business went into liquidation.

Hays Travel will buy all 555 stores as part of a deal brokered by insolvency advisers KPMG, and the privately-owned travel firm will look to re-employ former employees from Thomas Cook’s retail operations.

It also rejected the notion that high street travel agents are dying.

“We’re a successful business and because we’re independent and offer all tour operators, then we are optimistic that we will trade well ... in all of the shops,” founder John Hays told reporters after the deal.

Thomas Cook collapsed after it became unable to service its debts and failed to convince banks to back a rescue plan in the face of changing customer habits and intense competition from low-cost airlines and internet companies.

It had created the largest chain of travel agents in Britain when it merged its retail operations with those of the Co-operative Group and the Midlands Co-operative Society in 2011.

Hays Travel, a family company which is jointly owned and managed by Managing Director John Hays and Chair Irene Hays, will now be taking that network on.

The 40-year-old firm based in Sunderland in north-east England reached sales of more than 1 billion pounds ($1.2 billion) in 2018.

Its management said it was optimistic the shops would prosper thanks to the firm’s distinctive approach, where employees have free rein to give each branch a distinctive character, often built through social media.

“The death of the high street travel is a question we’ve been asked for many years, but we feel we do something different to other high street travel agents,” John Hays told reporters.

“We live in a digital world ... The Web was their enemy (at Thomas Cook), whereas if you ask the Hays Travel member of staff, they would say the Web is their friend, because we interact positively with it.”

Hays Travel currently operates just 190 of its own branches across the United Kingdom, employing 1,900 people.

The company said it had no plans to close any shops, but would evaluate the performance of each store going forward.

Hays Travel did not disclose financial details of the deal, other than saying it had been funded without taking on any debt.

Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary (RYA.I) last week said the business models of both tour operators and travel agents were dead as no young people bought holidays from them.

Irene Hays said her company’s data showed differently.

“There has been a huge resurgence in package holidays in recent years,” she told reporters. “It’s evident, it’s in all of our metrics. So the answer is no, we do not agree with Michael O’Leary.”]]>

It is believed that Prophet Moses received the Ten Commandments in the city, specifically on Mount Moses, also known as Mount Sinai, at whose foot lies the monastery.

At a 2.285-meter elevation, the mountain is hiked for sport and religious reasons. It is usually hiked at night in 1.5 to 4 hours so sunrise could be seen illuminating the reddish peaks and valleys below the second highest mountain in Egypt. If climbed in the winter, the mountain tops would be covered in snow. The mountain is a relatively easy hike.

Other peaks in the mountainous St. Catherine are more challenging and way less commercialized, such as Umm Shumar, which also prides itself in beautiful views at the peak. The Red Mountain is a moderate hike with beautiful views on the way to the top.

St. Catherine City is a natural reserve and a UNESCO World Heritage Area. It boasts the Nubian ibex, rock hyraxes, migrating birds and hundreds of naturally grown medicinal plants. Some tourists take days-long walks from St. Catherine to Sharm el-Sheikh or el-Tur cities with Bedouin guides to see splendid rock formations and small streams floating down boulders in the heart of the desert in and after the rain season in places such as Wadi Esla and Wadi Te’la.

The sight has become such a draw in the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi that authorities have set a weekend deadline for the removal of dozens of cafes that have cropped up, citing safety concerns.

“I love it. It’s crazy, and completely different to anywhere I’ve been before,” said Australian tourist Laura Metze, after a train rumbled by.

“I can also see why they would close it down because it’s pretty dangerous.”

Built in 1902 under French colonial rulers, the railway to Vietnam’s northern provinces carries passengers and cargo mostly between Hanoi and the eastern city of Haiphong, and the remote towns of Lang Son and Lao Cai, on the mountainous border with China.

It uses an old-fashioned French narrow gauge, and is so old that when North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visited Hanoi in February for a summit with U.S. President Donald Trump, he had to stop at the border and continue by car.

In Hanoi, the line brushes the rear of houses and shops as it snakes through the city’s dense center. Vendors stroll on the tracks, selling snacks on skewers, while some visitors sit on the railway lines and soak in the vibe.

In recent months, crowds of tourists have gathered along the railway to snap selfies with passing trains or lounge at trackside cafes.

On Sunday, a train had to make an emergency stop soon after leaving Hanoi railway station to avoid hitting tourists, state media said.

The next day, the city’s governing body ordered the cafes removed by Saturday to “ensure traffic safety”, at the request of the transport ministry.

“Though the railway cafes attract tourists, they are, in fact, violating some regulations,” Ha Van Sieu, a government tourism official, told media on Tuesday.

New and creative tourism products are encouraged, but must conform to legal regulations, Sieu added.

Vietnam received 12.87 million foreign visitors in the first nine months of this year, up nearly 11% on the year, government data shows.]]>

<![CDATA[EgyptAir to receive its second A220-300 plane Tuesday]]>
The plane was tested at Mirabel Airport, Canada, after the finalization of its assembly measures on Saturday and is due in Cairo on Tuesday.

A statement released by EgyptAir on Sunday said a delegation assigned to receive the plane has finalized all measures needed to check its operation efficiency.

The deal of purchase such type of planes comes as part of EgyptAir's strategy to update its fleet which started on September 8 and runs till May.

EgyptAir has also clinched a deal with Airbus to purchase 15 planes of A320neo type and are expected to start delivery in mid 2020.

The larger member of the A220 Family – the A220-300 – was specifically designed and built for the 120-160 seat market. It fuses performance and technology, allowing airlines to connect distant points on continents or sectors between which travel was previously unprofitable or impossible.

The A220-300’s advanced aerodynamics combined with specifically-designed Pratt & Whitney PurePower PW1500G geared turbofan engines make for an aircraft that delivers 20 percent lower fuel burn per seat than the previous generation aircraft.

The aircraft also leaves half the noise footprint and decreased emissions compared to its predecessor, making it a truly humanity-minded jetliner.

Airbus has delivered more than 80 aircraft of the type A220 to five regional and intercontinental airlines in Asia, the Americas, Africa and Europe, demonstrating the great potential of the new Airbus model.]]>

<![CDATA[U.S. FAA head set to explain Boeing 737 MAX progress to divided world regulators]]>
The closed-door briefing, on the eve of a United Nations aviation assembly in Montreal, will put representatives from about 50 nations in the same room, to swap concerns about Boeing Co’s proposed software fixes and new pilot training.

New FAA administrator Steve Dickson downplayed the chances of a consensus breakthrough, telling Reuters last week that the meeting was more “to provide regulators with the latest information.”

The representatives are drawn from countries with airlines that fly that MAX and those that will have flights of the aircraft landing, he said.

Boeing’s best-selling jet was grounded globally in March, days after the crash of an Ethiopian Airlines flight that followed a similar Lion Air disaster in Indonesia in October. A total of 346 people died in the two crashes.

The U.S. manufacturer has spent months working to update critical flight control software at the center of both crashes, in hopes of winning FAA approval for the planes to fly again in the United States between October and December.

Airlines have urged regulators to coordinate on the software changes in a bid to avoid damaging splits over safety, but some countries have already vowed to run their own independent validation studies before restoring flights.

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), which is doing its own examination of the 737 MAX design, said recently there was still no appropriate response to issues with the integrity of the aircraft’s angle of attack system.

In both crashes, erroneous data to one of the angle of attack sensors led to the activation of an automated system that repeatedly pushed down the plane’s nose.

Paul Njoroge, who lost his wife, three children and mother-in-law in the Ethiopian crash, and Chris Moore, who lost his daughter, plan to hold pictures of victims outside the meeting.

The FAA turned down their request to attend the briefing but Dickson agreed to meet the two men beforehand, said Nadia Milleron, whose daughter, Samya Stumo, also died in the Ethiopian crash.

The FAA is still reviewing the software update and awaiting a document longer than 500 pages from Boeing detailing the flight control system’s architecture and changes, Dickson said last week.

The agency also wants input from international regulators EASA, Canada and Brazil before it conducts the certification test flight, a key step before final approval.

The 737 MAX grounding is not on the agenda of the assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organization, to run from Sept. 24 to Oct. 4, but regulators will be anxious to avoid divisions over actions needed to restore the jet to service.]]>

XL Airways, which has said it needs 35 million euros ($38.6 million) in fresh financing, requested in a statement on Sunday a meeting with Air France and the French authorities in the coming hours before a court is expected to put it into receivership on Monday.

In an interview with Le Journal du Dimanche, also published on Sunday, XL Airways’ Chief Executive Laurent Mignan said his airline could become Air France’s low-cost offer on long-haul routes.

An Air France spokeswoman declined to comment.

Air France, France’s historic national carrier, is part of the Air France-KLM group.

XL Airways operated four Airbus A330 aircraft and provided mainly long-haul flights to the Caribbean, the United States and France’s Reunion island.

XL Airways’ woes follow similar issues at French airline Aigle Azur. Aigle Azur’s unfolding bankruptcy is the latest among smaller European airlines struggling to contend with higher fuel costs and stiff low-cost competition.]]>
